The Shelbyville Tennis Association (STA) was established in 1977 for the purpose of promoting tennis in Shelbyville and Bedford Co., Tennessee. Part of the function of the association was to organize and conduct the City Open Tennis Tournament and other related functions to advance the game of tennis. Prior to this time, the Shelbyville City Park had conducted this function. Several individuals were asked by the Shelbyville Park's Director to take over the running of the City Tournament, and the result was the organization of the STA. The organizers at the first meeting of the STA were Judge William S. Russell, Kay and Harold Rose, Roseanna and Joe Kimery, Jane Moore, Lucy Woosley, Mark Russell, Brock Field, and David Beavers. Since that time the STA has conducted numerous tournaments and clinics and provided support to the Shelbyville High School and Junior High teams.
Doyle Hutton and Mark Russell accepted leadership back in 1994 from Kay Rose and Jane Moore. When Mark moved out of state for a time, Doyle assumed the responsibilities of the association and is its current president. Chris King, Jr. became vice-president along with Phillip Frisby as treasurer in 2008.
