The 20.8 million dollar renovation of SCHS does not include bringing SCHS tennis to campus.
Shelbyville Central High School opened its doors for the first time back in 1977. To my knowledge there has been a tennis team since that time. The coaches of the team's early history may surprise some. They include Don Embry (principal of SCHS), Rick Insell, and the deceased Judge William Russell. What a storied past! I hope to learn of others who coached SCHS tennis in the future. Roseanne Kimery coached the team before I became coach back in 1998-1999.
The team has no facility on campus for practices or matches but is fortunate to use our local park's tennis courts. This does cause some angst among local residents when spring arrives and they're ready to hit the courts. Luckily, the public is overwhelmingly supportive of our young players. We hope to remedy the situation some day by having a tennis facility at the high school or middle school.
